📚🎁 It is said that the house where the Yehuda Leib Peretz library was established in Plungė was donated to the local Jewish community by the magnate M. Oginskis. During the Soviet period this building was converted into a residential house, but its exterior has not changed. You can see it in Plungė, S. Nėries street No 6.

🏘 Vilnius Jewish cemetery in Šnipiškės functioned from 1592 to 1891. It was closed due to lack of space for new burials, but the cemetery was regularly visited as all the enlightened people of the Vilnius Jewish community were buried here, including the famous Vilna Gaon. Today the unused Vilnius Concert and Sports Palace built in Soviet times stands on a place of the cemetery, and there are ongoing discussions on how to proceed with its reconstruction.

Back in the 1930s, a famous family of Litvaks and Klaipėda business owners ‒ the Nafthals ‒ lived in the house in the picture, 3 Liepų Street, and in the buildings across the street, 4 and 6 Liepų Street. The Nafthal family moved to Klaipėda in 1864 from Telšiai. The family became influential in Klaipėda with the ascent of Wolff Nafthal (1859-1933), who was one of the largest business owners in Klaipėda already at the end of the 19th century.

The “Wolff Nafthal” company had a steam-powered sawmill on the right shore of the Dangė (now Danė) river; the company sold grain for a while, too. Wolff quit active business after World War I and his sons took over. Elder brothers Nathan (born in 1887) and Bernard (born in 1893) were business partners in the “N. Nafthal & Co” company, and the youngest brother Max Meyer (born in 1896), after gaining knowledge of wood commerce at home and through studies abroad, started his own independent business of international wood commerce and timber brokerage in Klaipėda in the 1920s.
