In the 19th century Ukmergė there was a street with an exotic name to it – Egypt`s street. So it is not surprising at all, that Jewish prayer house built on this street received the symbolic name of the Egyptian prayer house. In 1889 Jews received a permission to build another house of prayer in Ukmergė – this time in brick. The large local community became too large even for the Great synagogue – even if not so much physically, but more ideologically. It was because of ideological disagreements, that part of the community was encouraged to separate and founded another, more “rebellious” house of prayer. This new one-story building was of historicism style, but the interior suffered so much during and after the Second World War, that it is difficult to tell its authentic style. During the years of Soviet occupation the building was reorganized for manufacturing purposes and Ukmergė button factory was established here. Although the factory is closed now, the building is still being used for economic purposes.
