Prekybiniai pastatai Molėtuose
Vilniaus g. 42-9, Molėtai
Historical quarter of Molėtai represents modern economic, social, and cultural life of local Jews during the interwar period. As the town’s economy mostly relied on Jews, most buildings that stood in the central part of the town (today – Vilnius and Market Streets), belonged to the Jews. In this part of the town the Jewish quarter had eventually formed and Jewish businessmen had 4 restaurants, various crafts workshops, the Jewish folk bank, and other Jewish-owned small businesses. The red brick building (built in 1933-1936), which can be seen on Vilnius Street, once housed about a dozen small shops that belonged to the Jews and their owners lived on the first floor of the building. It was the first building in interwar Molėtai, where advanced water supply and sewage systems were introduced at that time. Molėtai Jews were not only merchants or craftsmen – they were very socially and culturally active as well. There were 5 Jewish schools, library, 4 Jewish prayer houses, youth sports and theater groups in interwar Molėtai. This reminds us about the complexity of local Jewish community.
Tarpukariu žydams priklausė dauguma Molėtų centre buvusių pastatų (dab. Vilniaus ir Turgaus g.), šioje teritorijoje natūraliai formavosi žydų kvartalas – čia veikė 4 restoranai, amatininkų dirbtuvės, Žydų liaudies bankas ir kitos paslaugų bei prekybos įmonės. Vilniaus g. esančiame tarpukariu statytame (1933-1936 m.) raudonų plytų prekybiniame pastate veikė keliolika žydų krautuvėlių Tai buvo ir pirmasis pastatas Molėtuose, kuriame įvestos tuomet tokios pažangios buvę vandentiekio ir nuotekų sistemos.
